Collingwood Football Club Honors ANZAC Day
Magpies Discover 62nd ANZAC
A Longstanding Tradition
The Collingwood Football Club, also known as the Magpies or Pies, is an iconic Australian rules football club based in Melbourne. The club recently discovered a 62nd ANZAC who served in the First World War, bringing the total number of known ANZACs who played for Collingwood to 62.
The club's connection to ANZAC Day, which commemorates the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC) who fought in the Gallipoli Campaign, dates back to its humble beginnings. Collingwood was born out of the most disadvantaged neighborhood in Melbourne and grew to become one of the most famous football clubs in Australia.
The Magpies have a long-standing tradition of honoring their ANZACs, with a special ceremony held each year on ANZAC Day. The club also has a memorial at its home ground, the Melbourne Cricket Ground, which lists the names of all known Collingwood players who served in the war.
