Sunita Williams: American Astronaut and Record Holder
Early Life and Career
Sunita Lyn Williams (née Pandya) was born on September 19, 1965, in Euclid, Ohio. She graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1987 and served several years as a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Navy.
Astronaut Career
In 1998, Williams was selected by NASA as an astronaut candidate. She has since flown three missions to the International Space Station (ISS), where she set several records. In 2007, she became the first female astronaut to serve as commander of the ISS.
Currently, Williams serves as the pilot of the Crew Flight Test mission aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, which marked the first crewed flight for that vehicle.
